That depends on whether or not researchers can pick apart some of the technology obstacles in the way. The going has been slow, but recent developments indicate that things are moving in the right direction. Magnesium Batteries Solve Their Dendrite Problem Magnesium batteries have been talked up quite…

Another day, another review of a major hydrogen for energy report which doesn’t stand up to the slightest scrutiny. Unfortunately, this one is from the EU’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), its science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to European Union policy. Policymakers who read the splash page or policy brief would be left with the impression that green hydrogen could be manufactured and piped from Ukraine or northern Africa for…
Rivian is laying off 10% of its salaried workforce, the EV startup announced on Wednesday as it reported fourth-quarter and full-year earnings. It’s the company’s second round of layoffs in the past year. The news comes amid a broader slowdown in the EV industry. Rivian has yet to turn a profit on its vehicles and is under pricing pressure from industry leader Tesla. The company said it is in the midst of a “company-wide cost-transformation program.” “Our business is facing a challenging macroeconomic environment—including historically high interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty—and we need to make purposeful changes now to ensure our promising…
The Rivian R1T pickup and R1S SUV are some of the best $70,000+ EVs you can get right now, but they’re not perfect. They have a lot of bells and whistles, but even three years after the R1T went into production, Rivian hasn’t figured out a way to get streaming services like YouTube, Netlifx, or Amazon Prime on the EV’s main screen. The feature has been “on the roadmap” for about two years, according to a Reddit AMA session with the company’s head of software development, but it hasn’t come to fruition yet. The upcoming Rivian R2 EV, which will be unveiled on March 7, will be eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit, CEO RJ Scaringe said during an interview with Forbes. Currently, the all-electric R1S SUV and R1T pickup are eligible for a $3,750 tax credit when purchasing but only if the MSRP is under $80,000. Leasing, however, unlocks the full credit whatever the MSRP. But while a $3,750 cut on a car that costs over 70 grand isn’t such a big deal, a $7,500 reduction in price on a car that will probably cost around $45,000 is much more important,…
Lotus Technology is closing on an approved merger with Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) L Catterton Asia Acquisition Corp, setting the stage for a debut on the Nasdaq this week under the stock ticker symbol “LOT.” It’s just over a year since we first caught wind of Lotus’ plans to go public on the US stock market via a SPAC merger – a once popular method that has since cooled down. SPAC mergers enable a publicly traded company to be created to merge with an existing company. In the case of Lotus Technology, its SPAC is L Catterton Asia Acquisition Corp ($LCAA)…
